A canvas for 100 works of art
It was an ambitious thought, but I guess I’ve proved to myself over and over as I approach almost 10 years of making music, that I’m an ambitious person.
The thought went like this:
‘Imagine if a piece of music could inspire 100 other works of art from 100 different people across different creative disciplines. As if my music could be a canvas. The starting point of something else entirely, something unknown, beyond me, a spark hoping to ignite the flame of creative impulse in someone else’
Imagine that….
At the time this thought came to mind my second piano composition entitled ‘Interlude 2’ was imminently about to be released into the world and I felt there would be no better song, or moment to try out this conceptual, open ended, who the hell knows where this goes (but hell it’s kinda exciting) concept.
I wasted no time and began opening up to my musical inner circle, my close friends, family and indeed to other artists and creative souls I’d met over these years on the fashion and music scene.
People seemed open to it, and the first creative responses that came back were from the poets, people who had written something live to the track upon hearting it for the first time and sent me a picture of their work (See Image below)
It was so interesting to see how the same piece of music could help free and capture such wildly differing patterns of thought and also note the different emotional states laid visible in the words of the various authors.
I was moved
As I was intrigued and I wanted to see how far we could take this.
Things levelled up once more when performing artist and wordsmith Debris Stevenson bravely took on the challenge to create a piece of live performance art upon hearing the track for the first time and took to filming the whole thing. This is the sort of bravery and spontaneity I love to be witness to. Full conviction, fully present, in the moment and free from the over-thinking mind that can often hold us back by when it comes to fully unleashing our creativity into the world.
Wherever next….
I’ll admit to you now we were still 80 or so ‘creations’ off my lofty goal of 100 works of art, but I knew there was still room left to explore this.
You’ve surely heard of the saying: Energy flows where attention goes, but it must be true because soon enough an even more ambitious project, and the most in-depth creative interpretation of my song so far, manifested itself.
The resulting short film, I’m pleased to say, is so good I’ve decided to make it the official music video for ‘Interlude 2’ and not only that….
But we premier the video exclusively on my website this Saturday at 4pm GMT time.
Sometimes the creative path itself has a life of its own, and I can’t be more proud to show you how this simple idea of co-creation has taken such beautiful form. It was certainly a twisty and untraveled upon road, and maybe there are more chapters in store for Interlude 2 - I cant rule it out - and it’s life as a canvas for 100 works of art, but for now…..
If you’d like to join us for the premier of the film we made, please grab your access pass to the ‘Exclusive’ member area where the film will be shown from the Merch page in my website here.
